ParNET Harddrive - 10/02/95
---------------------------
Please distribute this little program of mine all around. It's a version
of ParNET which when installed on a harddrive works with Directory Opus to
produce an effective backup tool and copying program.
It will also allow access to a CD32/SX1 from an A1200 or an A1200 with
Zappo CDROM from another A1200/computer. It should support CDTV too.
I've literally spent all day the day before yesterday, yesterday and today
plus tonight (and that was sometime in January) and today - February 10th
redesigning everything that I've already redesigned - including changing
the ParNET structure and icons, adding various new files, scripts and
extras plus I've tidied everything up.
The disk is now bootable and I've got Directory Opus and ParNET to now work
from floppy (as well as installing to harddrive). I've also managed to
maintain the original ParNET 'window' method. This is now initialised via
Shell on a harddrive and the utility NETShell on ParNET HD:Utilities/
(basically the same thing!). Also I have re-written the cable docs more
clearly (I couldn't follow the original document!) as well as writing two
more, of which one labels the disk contents and the other gives harddisk
and Floppy instructions for installing/use and a bit on NETShell.
I've also added a couple of icons/drawers into DF0:Utilities. These are
for use with backing up a harddrive or part of one. Copy the drawer
A1200HD (which looks like a disk (because it is treated like a device))
into the DH0: or DH1: part of your backup machine's harddrive.
My CD32/SX1/HD is my backup machine and this has the A1200HD drawer in my
DH1: partition.
All I need to do to backup my A1200's DH0: partition, is access Directory
Opus and select DH0: in the left window. Secondly I access
NET:DH1/A1200/DH0/ in the right window. Now in the left window you can
select all files and copy or just copy selected ones to the right window
across the NET:. As Directory Opus copies the icons and their information
properly if at any time you need to restore your A1200 partition (or
parts of it) then it would come back exactly as it was, from copying back
a selected drawer contents from these drawers to a newly formatted A1200
partition.
For example I've changed my A1200HD 85Mb to a PC 540Mb one.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Beforehand I backed up all the A1200 partitions to my CD32 DH1:A1200HD/DH0
and DH1 drawers and then when my drive returned I formatted DH0 as bootable
and FastFile_System and DH1: as just FastFile_System.
Then it was peasy as I just ParNETted it back in about half an hour.
Everything was restored to how it was - just on a bigger power supply.
In fact whilst ParNET restored it I had a piece of cake. No more "Please
insert 'Extras' in drive DF0:" messages or having to install all the games
again!
...and unlike other backup systems I could modify the CD32/SX1/HD backup
(as I knew what I was doing) when I wanted to make some adjustments before
my A1200 machine returned.
I've also added install and remove scripts in DF0:Utilities which will
install or remove ParNET for you. If you have any copies of old ParNET
REMOVE THE FILES. The install looks for a drawer called ParNET in the
Workbench ONLY and if it isn't there it installs anyway. Hence you could
be left with useless files on your harddrive as only the new files rewrite
the old. Some of the older files are no longer used and wouldn't get
touched!
Finally I've tried to be fair in the credits to Vernon Graner (the original
author) and I GIVE HIM THE CREDIT for all the FILES that I used. If he's
genuinely keen to see his work in use then I cannot see him objecting.
Thanks for the idea, hope you like my modifications!!!
I think that's it. Have a good read of the docs in the ParNET drawer. If
you load them into a wordprocessor you will be able to print them, although
you may need to remove the [RETURN] symbols.
It's time now to say goodbye. Happy ParNETting!!!!
